1. Quick Facts

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Light: Bright Indirect Light
  • Water: Moderate (Allow soil to dry out between waterings)
  • Pet Safety: Safe for cats and dogs

2. Light: The Key to Round Leaves

Chinese Money Plants are sun-lovers and will thrive in a bright, sunny spot.

  • Ideal: Bright, indirect light near a North or East-facing window.
  • Low Light: They can survive in lower light, but they will become “leggy” and have a tendency to fall over.
  • Too Much: Direct midday sun in very hot climates can sometimes cause the leaves to turn a reddish-brown (sun stress).

3. The Art of Watering

The #1 killer of Chinese Money Plant is overwatering.

  • The Soil: Use a well-draining, general-purpose potting soil.
  • Watering Routine: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Wait until the top of the soil surface feels dry to the touch before watering again. For most homes, this means watering every 1-2 weeks.
  • The Method: Water deeply until water runs out of the drainage holes, then discard any excess water in the tray. Never let the pot sit in standing water.

4. Temperature & Humidity

Chinese Money Plants prefer the warm, humid air typical of most homes.

  • Temperature: They thrive in temperatures between 60°F and 80°F (15°C–27°C). Keep them away from drafty windows and AC vents.
  • Humidity: They enjoy moderate humidity. If your air is dry, use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group your Chinese Money Plant with other plants.

5. Maintenance & Grooming

  • Cleaning: The large, round leaves are dust-magnets. Wipe them down once a month with a damp cloth to keep the pores (stomata) clear and the plant healthy.
  • Rotation: These plants are highly phototropic. Rotate the pot a quarter-turn every week to ensure even growth and a symmetrical rosette shape.

6. Soil & Potting

  • The Mix: A well-draining, peat-based potting soil is ideal.
  • Repotting: Chinese Money Plants enjoy being slightly root-bound, but if you find yourself needing to water every 2-3 days, it’s likely time for a larger pot.

7. Common Problems

  • Curling Leaves: The plant is thirsty. Increase watering frequency.
  • Yellow Leaves: Can indicate either too much light (scorching) or overwatering (root rot).
  • Lack of Pups: Usually a sign that the plant needs a bit more light. Move it closer to a window, but still out of direct sun.

Quick Pro Tip

Share the love. Chinese Money Plants are famous for their prolific production of “pups” (offsets) around their base. You can gently separate the pups when they are about 1/4 the size of the mother plant and gift them to friends and family!
