Coleus scutellarioides

Coleus is a stunning tropical perennial prized for its kaleidoscopic foliage. Its leaves come in an endless variety of patterns and colors, including vibrant shades of burgundy, chartreuse, pink, and orange. While it does produce small flowers, they are often removed to focus the plant's energy on its spectacular leaves. It is a fast-growing plant that adds immediate visual impact to indoor spaces or shade gardens.

Pet Warning

Coleus contains essential oils and diterpenoids that are toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. Ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and skin irritation.

Care Guide

Light Requirements

Place your Coleus in a spot with bright, indirect light. While some modern cultivars can handle direct sun, most will experience scorched leaves if exposed to intense midday rays. Indoors, an east or north-facing window is ideal.

Watering and Soil

Maintain consistently moist soil. Coleus is famous for 'fainting' or wilting dramatically when thirsty, but it usually recovers quickly once watered. Use a well-draining potting mix to prevent root rot. Never let the pot sit in standing water.

Temperature and Humidity

This plant thrives in warm temperatures between 65°F and 85°F (18°C–29°C). It is sensitive to cold and should be kept away from drafty windows or air conditioning vents. High humidity is essential; use a pebble tray or a humidifier to keep the leaves lush.

Pruning and Maintenance

To prevent the plant from becoming leggy, regularly pinch off the growing tips. This encourages a bushier growth habit. If the plant produces small flower spikes, pinch them off to ensure the plant continues to put its energy into foliage production.

Seasonal Care

In winter, growth will slow down. Reduce watering frequency and stop fertilizing until new growth appears in the spring.
