Turtle Vine
Callisia repens
Callisia repens, also known as Turtle Vine or Bolivian Jew, is a vigorous, trailing perennial succulent from the Commelinaceae family. It is characterized by its dense, mat-forming growth habit and small, fleshy, oval-shaped leaves that are typically bright green on top with striking purple or burgundy undersides. Its cascading stems make it an exceptional choice for hanging baskets or as a lush groundcover in temperate indoor gardens.

Care Guide
Light Requirements
Callisia repens thrives in bright, indirect light. While it appreciates some direct morning sun, harsh afternoon rays can scorch its delicate foliage. If the plant becomes 'leggy' (long stems with sparse leaves), it is likely not receiving enough light.
Watering and Soil
Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. This plant is sensitive to overwatering and can develop root rot if kept in soggy conditions. Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally a peat-based soil with added perlite or coarse sand.
Temperature and Humidity
Maintain temperatures between 60°F and 80°F (15°C - 27°C). It prefers moderate humidity levels; if your indoor air is very dry, placing the pot on a pebble tray with water can help. Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Maintenance and Pruning
This plant is a fast grower and can quickly become overgrown or thin at the top. Regularly pinch back the growing tips to encourage a bushier, more compact growth habit. The pinched stems can be easily used for propagation.
Seasonal Care
During the winter months, growth will slow significantly. Reduce watering frequency and stop fertilizing until the return of warmer weather in the spring.
